Biodiversity and Ecosystem Processes in Tropical Ecosystems Gordon H. Orians 1    Received 19-I-2000. Accepted 24-I-2000. Living organisms on Earth are being subjected to major disruptions in the form of massive exchanges of species -pathogens, predators, and competitors- among biogeographic regions, overharvesting, habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change. Rates of habitat conversions, especially of forests, are higher in tropical regions than elsewhere on Earth (FAO 1993, Skole and Tucker 1993, Whitmore 1997). Until recently, biologists have directed most of their efforts toward estimating the extent and causes of species loss and developing ways to reduce the rate of extinctions. However, during the past decade much attention been paid to the consequences of the loss of species for the functioning of ecological processes (Chapin et al. 1998, Loreau 1998, Naeem 1996, 1997, Schulze and Mooney 1993, Tilman, 1997, Tilman and Downing 1994, Yachi & Loreau 1999...

What are primary consumers in savanna

Image
What are primary consumers in the savanna? Primary consumers are organisms that get their energy from eating a producer. Some examples of primary consumers in the savanna are zebras, kangaroos, antelope and elephants. What is one producer in the savanna? One of the producers that is found in the savanna biome is the Acacia tree. The Acacia tree is a producer because it is able to make its own food through the process of photosynthesis. What is the food chain in the savanna? Food chains show one of the links in a food web for an ecosystem. A food web for the savanna shows how energy flows between a producer, primary and secondary consumer. How does the savanna food web work? The savanna food web show how both food and energy flow throughout the ecosystem. The food web is a diagram that contains some of the organisms on the savanna and arrows that show how food and energy move through the ecosystem. What are primary consumers in the savanna? Primary consumers are organisms that get t...

Producers in the ecosystems

Image
A consumer is an organism that cannot produce its own food but needs to eat plants or animals to obtain its energy. Some examples are dogs, fish, elephants, and humans. What is the role of a producer in an ecosystem? A producer is a plant or algae that can produce food for itself using the energy from the sun or chemicals found in the ocean. They are important because they are the basis of life in all food chains in the ecosystem. What are 3 examples of a producer? Producers are plants or bacteria that can make their own food. Some examples of this are grass, trees, lichens, bushes, algae, and kelp. Create an account Table of Contents Producers, Consumers, and Decomposers What is a Producer in an Ecosystem? What is a Consumer in an Ecosystem? What is a Decomposer in an Ecosystem? Show  Producers, Consumers, and Decomposers Every person, plant, or animal needs to take in energy to live and grow. This process is going on around all the time. For example, grass grows on a prair...

Food chain in the ecosystems

Image
food chain , in  ecology , the sequence of transfers of matter and energy in the form of food from organism to organism. Food chains intertwine locally into a  food web  because most organisms consume more than one type of animal or  plant . Plants, which convert  solar energy  to food by  photosynthesis , are the primary food source. In a  predator  chain, a plant-eating animal is eaten by a flesh-eating animal.                                                                                                                                  In a  parasite  chain, a smaller     organism consumes part of a ...

Food web in the ecosystems

Image
Food web a complex network of interconnecting and overlapping food chainsafety showing feeding relationshipso within a community. A food chain shows how matter and energy from food are transfered from one organisms to another  Where as a food web illustrates how food chains intertwined in an ecosystem. Food webs also demonstrate that most organisms  consume or are consumedoing by more than one species.all food webs except those centered deep within on the ocean floor are powered by the sun. Organisms within food webs are divided into two main categories: Producers also called autotrophs which make their own food and consumer also called heterotrophs which depend on producers and other consumers for nourishment.  food chain , in  ecology , the sequence of transfers of matter and energy in the form of food from organism to organism.                                      ...

Food web interactions

Image
Although depictions of food websafety often show direct single line paths of consumption from producer to consumers on various trophic levels like food chains do,they can also show the way in which some organisms diverge from these patterns for example larger carnivores and omnivores whose diets are not limited to a few types of animals may also primary consumers if given the opportunity.  In addition many organisms within a food web may be part of several food chains within that ecosystem  for example squirrels eat a variety of food including nuts, fruits, seeds and insects. food chain , in  ecology , the sequence of transfers of matter and energy in the form of food from organism to organism. Links between ecosystems and human activities

Image
We have managed to control fire, practice agriculture and build transportation vehicles. We have built factories, dam, solar panels  and we are constantly finding new ways of exploring space.Still, the human race's thirst to use, modify and transforms natural ecosystems seems endless. For instance,  when we transform a plain to grow cereal fields  Today human activities have such an impact on ecosystems that we now speak of the anthropocene timeline.this is a period that defines the significant human impact of human activities on the earth's atmospheric and hydrologic systems  This period in time also considersee changes happening due to climate change events which is also mainly caused by human activities. When trees are taken down in the amazonIan forest, the ecosystems changes as species struggle to survive and the local humidity and the climate both change. As well building a dam also changes the distribution of water and affects the species living along the ri...
